The Rocky Horror Picture Show, more local events | Culture

The name of the Colorado Springs shadowcast is borrowed from Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s famous line: “I see you shivering with anticipation… patiently!”

Antici-Pations Cast’s first show took place in 2018. [my husband, Jeshua Unger] looked at me and said, ‘Let’s do it ourselves,’ ”director Katie Cleveland said. “And I was like, we can’t do this. We can’t do a casting. We don’t have money, we don’t have props, we don’t have speakers, we don’t have lights. What do you mean by ‘let’s do this’? And he said to me, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ And they did.

The couple didn’t just want to create a theater company; they wanted to create a safe space for exploration and expression, especially for people who had no theater or theater experience. This is their third (which would have been their fourth, if not for COVID) year of Rocky horror performances. And they are not just one Rocky horror group – they did The princess to marry, Index and Bad girls too much.

Everyone feels unsuited at some point in their life, says Cleveland. The Antici-Pations provide a space where you can achieve the truest expression of yourself without fear of judgment. And The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a film that celebrates all identities, only amplifies this energy of inclusion. “This movie in general is just about being yourself and being who you are,” says Cleveland. “And if it’s some crazy transvestite alien wearing corsets and fishnets, that’s like… cool, it’s you and so be it.”

In the end, while Rocky horror may not be for everyone, it welcomes everyone. “There has been a big divide in the world we live in, and people sometimes feel like they don’t have that safe space,” says Cleveland. “And so, Rocky horror sort of gives you that.

Shadowcasting, where a set of performers perform the film in front of the screen as it is played, is a tradition that has its origins among fans of the Rocky horror cult classic. It has since evolved into a unique theatrical experience applied to cult films like beetle juice and Willy wonka. Interactivity is a key element of these performances. Actors make callbacks – jokes that respond to lines from the movie – and sometimes veteran audience members do, too.

And for these performances, each ticket comes with a bag of accessories. “There is a moment in the movie [where] he says: ‘Toast!’ In your little bag is a piece of toast that you throw up into the air. In the raining scene, you have a squirt gun in your bag and you can make it rain, ”says Cleveland. The Antici-Pations make it clear that audience participation and engagement is as essential as what’s happening on stage (and on screen).

“It’s a lot of chaos … but it’s such a nice chaos,” says Cleveland.
