MLS announces full schedule of off-season roster-building events


NEW YORK (Thursday, September 15, 2022) – Major League Soccer today announced the full schedule of off-season roster-building events, highlighted by the MLS Expansion Draft on November 11 and the MLS SuperDraft 2023 presented by adidas on December 21.

As 2023 expansion club St. Louis CITY SC prepares to begin playing in MLS next season, the team will have the opportunity to select up to five current MLS players to help shape the core of their inaugural roster. during the MLS expansion draft. The club also holds the first overall selection for the SuperDraft MLS 2023 presented by adidas.

The full schedule of events and off-season roster build dates are detailed below.

MLS off-season roster building events

Monday, November 7 – 12 PM ET /// Trading Window Opens
After a two-month roster freeze, MLS clubs can begin making adjustments to their rosters and making trades with other MLS teams. All line-up decisions will be made public by the individual clubs.

Wednesday, November 9 – 12 p.m. ET /// Commercial window closes and blackout begins
The blackout period begins during which clubs can no longer sign and/or trade players until the end of the MLS Expansion Draft.

Thursday, November 10 to be determined /// Announcement of the extension of protected lists
The list of players eligible for selection in the MLS Expansion Draft will be published by MLS Communications.

St. Louis CITY SC may select up to five players from the list of eligible players. The list of players eligible for selection in the MLS Expansion Draft will be released by MLS Communications on Thursday, November 10.

Monday, November 14 – 12 p.m. ET /// Club deadline to submit bona fide offers
MLS clubs must submit to the MLS League office, in writing, all bona fide offers. All line-up decisions will be made public by the individual clubs.

Monday, November 14 – 12:00 p.m. ET /// Deadline for club to exercise options
MLS clubs must submit to the MLS League Office which players will have their options exercised and which players will not have their options exercised. All line-up decisions will be made public by the individual clubs.

Wednesday, November 16 1 p.m. ET /// Free branch opening
Clubs may contract players other than their own who are eligible for free agency. Players eligible for Free Agency are out-of-contract and declined option players who are at least 24 years old and have completed a minimum of five years of service.

MLS Communications will release the full list of free agents on Wednesday, November 16.

Thursday, November 17 1:00 p.m. ET /// Reinstatement Process, Stage 1
The re-entry process (Stage 1 and Stage 2) takes place in reverse order of the end of the 2022 season, taking into account post-season performance. Expansion club St. Louis CITY SC will be 29th in each round.

Eligible players include those who are at least 22 years old, have at least one year of service, and are not eligible for free agency. A player at the end of the contract who received a BFO from his current club will not be eligible for the Re-Entry Draft.

The list of players eligible for selection in the Reinstatement Process – Stage 1 will be released by MLS Communications on Wednesday, November 16.

Thursday, November 17 5 p.m. ET /// Year-End Waivers
The year-end waiver process is conducted in reverse order of the end of the 2022 season, taking into account playoff performances. Expansion club St. Louis CITY SC will get the 29th pick, the final selection in each round.

Players who do not meet the minimum requirements for the reinstatement process or free agency are eligible for selection.

The list of players eligible for year-end waivers will be released by MLS Communications on Wednesday, November 16.

Tuesday, November 22 1:00 p.m. ET /// Reinstatement Process Stage 2

The Reinstatement Stage 2 process occurs in the same order as Stage 1 and consists of MLS players who were not selected in Stage 1.

Any unselected players from Stage 1 will not be available for selection, as players may re-sign with their former club between stages or may opt out of the process.

The list of players eligible for selection in the Reinstatement Process – Stage 2 will be released by MLS Communications on Tuesday, November 22.

Thursday, December 8 – Monday, December 12 TBD /// MLS College Showcase
The third annual MLS College Showcase will take place December 8-12 in Cary, North Carolina. The event will give the technical staff of each MLS club the opportunity to scout the top collegiate prospects in the country, including players still eligible for the NCAA.

Wednesday, December 21 TBD /// MLS SuperDraft 2023 presented by adidas
The 2023 MLS SuperDraft will consist of three rounds of player selection. The MLS SuperDraft order is established by taking the reverse order of the club standings at the end of each MLS season, taking into account post-season performance, with new expansion club St. Louis CITY SC in the lead. of the order.
